It was a long time writing about various sports on behalf of The Washington Post, including tennis, football and basketball. Nichols joined ESPN from 2004. She stayed for nearly nine years with the company, winning 2 Emmy Awards. She also appeared on the most popular shows on ESPN such as SportsCenter and NFL Countdown. Her Monday Night Football coverage as the team's reporter was an integral an integral part of her job at the network. Her next assignment was CNN and Turner Sports. Unguarded With Rachel Nichols was the first show she created and hosted. It aired on CNN International as well as CNN. The show drew over one billion viewers across the whole world. Nichols was a reporter for NBA shows on TNT, including the playoffs, regular season and All-Star broadcasts. Nichols also worked for TBS broadcasting golf and baseball broadcasts, and Final Four broadcasts on CBS. This is the first time in the award's 42-year-old tradition that a woman has been nominated amongst the more than 200 candidates.
